anthony reid: mental mapping
Wimborne-based artist Anthony Reid is inviting local people to look at their surroundings in a new way through Mental Mapping – a participatory visual arts project exploring our personal relationships with the places in which we live.
Anthony’s artistic practice is rooted in an interest in the relationship between people, landscape and the built environment, and particularly the emotional and psychological connections we form with our surroundings.
Originally studying Sculpture at Chelsea School of Art, Anthony went on to teach Art and Design Technology before studying Vernacular Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. He later worked as an editor on Handmade Houses and Other Buildings and Buildings Without Architects.
Now living in Wimborne, Anthony continues to develop his own art practice, with a particular interest in monochromatic work through sketching and photomontage. His inspiration often comes from the everyday – the familiar scenes, buildings and snapshots of his local neighbourhood that can easily go unnoticed.

The idea of mental mapping was first introduced to Anthony while studying at Oxford Brookes. Rather than creating a conventional geographical map, the process is about capturing an individual’s personal experience of moving through and living within a place – recalling landmarks, experiences and associations to build a subjective picture of their surroundings.
Through his Culture Catalyst Micro-Commission, Anthony will bring this approach to Wimborne with a series of five workshops at Walford Mill Craft Centre.

Anthony’s Mental Mapping project will take the form of five creative workshops at Walford Mill Craft Centre this autumn, where participants will create their own artworks documenting a journey through Wimborne.
The workshops run on Sundays 4 & 11 October and 1 & 8 November, plus Saturday 31 October. They are open to all abilities, and you don’t need to attend every session. The full workshop series costs £95.
Finished works will have the opportunity to be exhibited at Wimborne Minster in December 2026.
